Marble staircases and steps

A marble staircase is the most durable staircase you can put in a house or an apartment building: it does not wear with footsteps, it cleans easily and it never needs replacing. At SKARIS MARBLE we have been cutting staircases since 1976 — from the simple one-piece step of an apartment building to circular stairs with a carved nosing.

What a staircase includes

  • Treads 3 or 4 cm thick, in one piece, with a polished or bevelled nosing.
  • Risers 2 cm thick in the same or a contrasting material.
  • Stair skirting cut at an angle to follow the pitch of the stairs.
  • Landings and top landings from single slabs.
  • Anti-slip grooves (2–3 lines) or a textured strip on the nosing — mandatory on exterior and communal stairs.

Materials for staircases

For an interior staircase in a home: Dionyssos, Volakas, Thassos, or warm beige Crema Marfil. For apartment buildings and heavily used stairs: Kavala and Nestos — off-white, hard, economical. For exterior stairs: granite or a hard marble with a honed/flamed surface that does not slip in the rain; see also the page on marble for outdoor areas.

How we work

  1. Measuring on site, with a template where the staircase turns.
  2. Cutting at the factory: all steps from the same batch for a uniform colour.
  3. Installation by our own crew, levelling every step and sealing the joints.
  4. Hand-over of a polished and protected staircase.

Price and quotation

The price depends on the material, the thickness, the cut-outs and the edge finishing — which is why we do not quote a blind “price per metre”. See what determines the price of marble and send us dimensions, a sketch or a drawing through the quote form: we reply with a written, itemised quotation and a delivery time.

Frequently asked questions

Is a marble staircase slippery? Polished and wet, yes. That is why on exterior and communal stairs we cut anti-slip grooves or leave a honed strip on the nosing.

Can marble go over an existing terrazzo or tiled staircase? Usually yes, if there is enough height; we check it when measuring.

How long does installation take? A staircase of 15–18 steps, 1–2 days.

Do you take on apartment-building staircases for contractors? Yes, with priority on delivery time and delivery on pallets per floor.
