-Black Beauty-
Description & Features
Black Beauty belongs to the black granites of India, a group in which the word granite is used commercially for any hard crystalline rock that takes a polish; many Indian black granites are geologically dolerites or gabbros, although no published petrographic analysis was found for this particular variety. It is reported from quarries in the Purulia area of West Bengal, where black granite production is recorded. Polished, it shows a deep black with a fine to medium grain and faint greyish specks that are visible only up close. Textured finishes change the picture: antique and flamed-brushed surfaces open up to a medium grey with scattered black flecks, a salt-and-pepper look, so darker and lighter surfaces can be combined from the same material. As a silicate rock it is not etched by kitchen acids the way marble is, and trade sources give water absorption below 0.5% and a hardness of about 6–7 Mohs. The polished finish suits kitchen and bathroom countertops and cladding, antique suits floors and stairs, while the slip-resistant flamed-brushed finish is intended for outdoor paving, steps and window sills; other finishes can be produced on request. It needs sealing and cleaning with neutral cleaners.
Why choose Black Beauty
- Three finishes: polished, antique, flamed-brushed
- Deep black when polished, salt-and-pepper grey when textured
- Silicate rock – not etched by acids like marble
- One stone for countertops, floors and outdoor areas
Technical Specifications
| Geological Type | Igneous rock – dark commercial black granite (Indian black granites are often dolerites or gabbros; no petrographic analysis found for this variety) |
| Country of Origin | India |
| Color & Pattern | Polished: deep black with a fine grain and faint greyish specks; antique/flamed: medium grey with scattered black flecks (salt-and-pepper) |
| Hardness (Mohs) | ≈6–7 (trade source data – no test found for this variety) |
| Density (g/cm³) | ≈2.8–3.0 (typical range for dark commercial black granites – no test found for this variety) |
| Water Absorption (%) | < 0.5 (trade source data – no laboratory test found) |
| Frost Resistance | Suitable for exterior use as a dense silicate rock with low water absorption (no published frost test); for outdoor floors and steps the slip-resistant flamed-brushed finish is preferred |
| Acid Sensitivity | Resistant to household acids (silicate rock – not etched by lemon or vinegar the way marble is); avoid strong chemicals and abrasives that dull the polish |
| Recommended Finishes | Polished, Antiqued, Flamed + brushed, Other finishes (honed, leather, sandblasted etc.) on request |
