-Vizag Blue-
Description & Features
Vizag Blue takes its name from Visakhapatnam, known as Vizag, the coastal city of Andhra Pradesh in eastern India; an Indian exporter places its quarries in the neighbouring Srikakulam district, and it is also traded as Orion Blue. The slab has a lavender-like blue-violet background crossed by diagonal, wavy flows: dark purple-burgundy streaks alternate with light grey-blue patches and give a strong sense of movement. In Srikakulam district the blue decorative stones come from migmatites and charnockites of the Eastern Ghats, and the banded texture of Vizag Blue fits such a rock, although no petrographic analysis was found for this variety. According to an Indian exporter's data, density is about 2.84 g/cm³, water absorption 0.13%, compressive strength 238 MPa dry and 223 MPa wet, and flexural strength about 16.5 MPa; other sources give water absorption of up to 0.25% and good freeze–thaw resistance. It is supplied polished, which brings out the depth of the blue, while honed, leather or flamed finishes can be produced on request. It suits kitchen and bathroom countertops, wall and fireplace cladding, floors, stairs and exterior cladding. As a silicate rock it resists kitchen acids; it needs sealing and neutral cleaners.
Why choose Vizag Blue
- Distinctive blue-violet tone in a natural stone
- Wavy flow that brings movement to countertops and walls
- Water absorption ≈0.13% (exporter data)
- For interior and exterior spaces
Technical Specifications
| Geological Type | Probably a metamorphic rock (gneiss/migmatite) sold as granite – like the blue stones of the Srikakulam area (no petrographic analysis found for this variety) |
| Country of Origin | India |
| Quarry / Region | Andhra Pradesh – Visakhapatnam (Vizag) area; an Indian exporter cites quarries in Srikakulam district |
| Color & Pattern | Blue-violet (lavender) background with wavy diagonal flows of dark purple-burgundy streaks and light grey-blue patches |
| Hardness (Mohs) | ≈6–7 (typical for silicate rocks with quartz and feldspar) |
| Density (g/cm³) | ≈2.84 (Indian exporter data; another exporter gives ≈2.96) |
| Water Absorption (%) | 0.13 (Indian exporter data); 0.15–0.25 per a stone database |
| Compressive Strength (MPa) | 238 dry / 223 wet (Indian exporter data) |
| Flexural Strength (MPa) | ≈16.5 (modulus of rupture 19 dry / 18 wet – Indian exporter data) |
| Frost Resistance | Good freeze–thaw resistance per a stone database, with low water absorption; exporters recommend it for interior and exterior use – on outdoor floors with a slip-resistant finish |
| Acid Sensitivity | Good chemical resistance (silicate rock); not etched by kitchen acids the way marble is, but avoid strong chemicals and abrasives |
| Recommended Finishes | Polished, Other finishes (honed, leather, flamed or flamed-brushed) on request |

Export & project supply
SKARIS MARBLE supplies Vizag Blue to stone importers, fabricators, architects and hotel projects outside Greece. From our facility in Thessaloniki we handle the whole order in-house:
- Slab selection and matching – we grade and match the slabs for colour and veining, so a large order stays uniform across the whole project.
- Cut-to-size and finishing – pieces cut, edged and finished to your drawings, numbered per room or elevation and ready to install.
- Mixed shipments – Greek marbles, granites, porous limestone (porolithos) and quartz surfaces can be combined in one order.
- Export packing – crated and labelled for sea or road freight, ex-works Thessaloniki; delivered terms quoted on request.
